When I first started my blog 5 years ago, I had no clue what I was doing. There was some information online but not a lot. If I had known some of the things that I do now, I would’ve definitely done things differently. When I first started, I chose Blogger because it was free. And my blog name at the time was 500 Days of a Fashionista. Basically I wanted a creative outlet where I could actually use my fashion degree.
Choose Your Domain
It wasn’t until 2016 that I wanted to get serious. Late one night I changed my blog’s name to Effortlessly Sophisticated on impulse and I purchased the domain. Funny thing, when I woke up the next morning, I thought I had changed it to something different. When coming up with a name, don’t buy the domain late at night. At this point, I was still on Blogger and a month later, I decided to switch to self-hosted on WordPress.org and went with BlueHost for my web hosting site.
Hosting Site and Plan
If you want to make money from your blog, you are not allowed to be on a free platform, you MUST be self-hosted. In order to have a site on the internet, you need a web host. Like I mentioned above, my web host is BlueHost. What I love about them is that their pricing is so reasonable. Their plans start at about $4/month. And they also have 24/7 customer service and a 30 day money back guarantee. I’ve used their customer service multiple times and they are so helpful.
Personalize Your Site
Bluehost actually doesn’t need you to install WordPress anymore. They do it all for you. From here you can customize your site. WordPress has a bunch of free themes, but I highly suggest purchasing one. There are a lot of great ones that start at $15-$20. Creative Market and Etsy are both great sites to check for themes. When deciding on a theme, make sure there is a mobile option.
Now that you are all set up, you can start creating posts and start making money!
